Codes and conventions of posters

Most posters have conventions including:

Coming soon or release date
Main focal picture relating to the film
Large title
Icons of film genre
Tagline
Age certification
Cast and crew list

The tagline is normally short and snappy, revealing enough about the film too draw people in so they want to watch it however being careful not to reveal too much and spoil the film.

Posters also include positive quotes from critics of popular newspapers and magazines which give credibility to the film. This is useful as it means people may want to go out and see it as it has been rated positively by esteemed critics who have experience in reviewing films.

Here are some examples of film posters

This poster has several conventions including the tagline 'Some thing has found us' which relates to the horror genre of the film and for this reason it could draw people who like horror films in. The main image is of a destroyed Statue of Liberty, this is slightly unconventional as it doesn't feature the main characters however it it showing the destruction of an American iconic statue which will entice people. particularly Americans, to see the film as this image will make them want to see what happens in the film as they could perhaps relate this to similar real life events such as 9/11. Other features include the release date and all the cast and crew being detailed on the bottom. Furthermore, the institutions logo is also placed on the bottom of the poster.

Much like the Cloverfield poster this one has the title of the film, logo of the institution, date of release and cast and crew on the bottom of the poster, however instead of a tagline this one has the main actors names on the top as they are big names and all related to their individual characters as the Avengers is a film made up of several Marvel characters. This main image is more conventional that Cloverfield's poster as it includes the main actors and this will make people want to see the film as they are extremely famous A-Lists stars and the fact they are dressed as their characters will also draw the audience who read the comic books as they will want to see the movie as it features their favourite characters.

Filming diary- Planning stage

I hope to film a short section, certain elements of the first kitchen scene, from the 13th December to the 17th December. These may include shots from shot number 1 on my storyboard up until shot number 15. In addition , I may film shots 93-95 as they take place in the same setting. These shots will require relatively few props, only fake drugs which can be achieved using flour or a similar substance so this would be relatively easy and cost effective.

Weather forecast for planned filming dates

This is the early weather forecast for the day I plan to film the opening scenes of my short film, which is Saturday 13th December 2014. Closer to the date of filming, I will analyse the updated and detailed weather forecast in greater depth however for now it appears as though the day will be fairly mild therefore good conditions to film.

Model for my short film

This video from Hollyoaks shows a running over stunt and I am modelling the stunt in my own short film on this piece as it uses fast editing, clever cinematography and makes good use of sound and it makes the stunt seem very effective.

Audience feedback to my short film idea

Audience feedback to my short film idea by s0016845 on GoAnimate

My survey:

I asked 16 people two questions regarding my idea for my short film. The first question I asked was 'Does the idea for my short film sound good and feasible?'. Out of the 16 responses I recieved for this question, all 16 people said they liked the idea. This shows that my idea could be an interesting, thought provoking film which may appeal to several different target audiences as the age range of people I asked ranged from 15-40+. These responses indicate that I should continue to persue this idea and storyline whilst producing my short film.

The second question I asked the respondents was what their favourite category of short film/film was out of a list I provided. The options were Crime, Comedy and Horror. I decided to not include options such as Romance and Sci-Fi as I felt the bugetry restrictions and form (5 minutes of film) would mean these would be hard to produce to a good standard: I felt the 3 options I provided were the most realistic and suitable for the form I am working with. The responses I recieved in regard to this question were that 12 people prefered Crime (the category of my short film), 2 preferred Comedy and 2 preferred Horror. This indicates to me that a Crime fim is the most popular choice, admitedly amongst the limited focus group my questions were asked too which means that these results must be assesed with some ambiguity, however I could perhaps include elements of Horror such as suspense and thrilling scenes as including Comedy in a tense Crime short film would feel out of place and mean that the verisimilitude of the short film would be lost.

Scriptwriting

There are precise conventions to follow when script writing including :

It must be formatted correctly, an example is shown here:

To do this, there is a free software called Celtx which helps you to format your script professionally and this means it is sticking to conventions.

I have decided to use Celtx to help me write my script for my short film.

Hypodermic needle theory

The hypodermic needle theory is theory that messages are directly recieved and wholly accepted by the reader. This view is seen as obsolete today as people now have much more choice and ways to consume media, have more opinions about media and are more aware of the ways media works.

Reception theory- Stuart Hall

Blumler and Katz- Uses and Gratification theory

People can relate to media texts based on their own experience

An audience may view My Sister's keeper as sad because they may have their own personal experience of the devastating effects of cancer, or they may feel sympathetic towards the characters in the film.

People make choices of what they want to watch

When a person watches the news they are being a PASSIVE AUDIENCE because they are just taking in information. When a person chooses to watch TV of different genres they are being an ACTIVE AUDIENCE as they are making choices based on what gratifies them.

People have different social and psychological needs

There are 4 different ways to categorise this theory-

SURVEILLANCE -

People need to know what is going on around them for security, so they watch the news. They may watch the local news to find out what is happening in their area such as weather and stories of interest.

PERSONAL IDENTITY-

People position themselves in society in regard to the media they consume. For example, the song 'All About That Bass' is about being comfortable in their own skin so people may relate to this.

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS-

People use TV as a form of companionship. For example when characters in a soap die, those who have watched regularly often grieve for that character as if they have lost a friend. People also use TV as a way to start conversation with family and friends, for example who their favourite singer on The X Factor is.

DIVERSION-

People watch TV so they can forget about their own problems and lives for a while and think about something else. Furthermore, people may relate to characters on TV shows who are going through similar situations for example Ian coming to terms with the death of his daughter on EastEnders.

3 original ideas

Three original ideas

1.       A crime short film which sees a teenage boy stand up to his oppressor who supplies him with drugs to sell to his peers. His sister finds them and confronts him and subsequently destroys them which means he has to go meet the baron with no profit. The boy takes a gun to blackmail the man however the man runs him over as he pretends to get the money the boy asked for out of his car. The man thinks the boy is dead so panics and goes to leave however in a twist the boy shoots at the man and kills him. The injured boy rings his sister, however in a final twist she has been killed by one of the man’s contacts.

2.       My second idea was a horror short film in which a person is trapped in a haunted house and cannot escape from the many demons in the house however at the end it is revealed that the victim is actually a hallucinating drug addict and his vision has allowed him to begin his recovery.

3.       My 3rd idea was a medical thriller which follows a man in a coma as he relives certain parts of his life that he regrets which allows him to fix his relationship with his girlfriend however in the twist at the end it is revealed that the man dies when we think he is waking up.

Skills development evaluation essay

In my first year I used Photoshop to produce my music magazine. Prior to starting the course I had never used Photoshop before in depth, so throughout the year I learnt how to use the different tools to greatly improve on my preliminary task of the college magazine. I learnt how to improve skin tone and remove blemishes by using the spot healing brush tool. In addition, I used liquefy to create a slimmer profile for my model in line with my magazine conventions as well as using the quick selection tool to remove any background that I needed to be clear so I could add in a background for my magazine. Another medium of digital technology I used was the camera, I had no prior knowledge of framing a shot and lighting a shot before I started the course so throughout the year I built up this knowledge until I could confidently frame, position and light a shot. I did have to retake my pictures several times until they matched the conventions of music magazines and this demonstrates the fact I have built up my skills over the year.

I feel that over the course of the first year I developed my creativity, which helped me to produce a much better magazine at the end of the course than my first attempt. My first preliminary effort, my perfume advert, was an abstract idea with no model which proved to be an ineffective choice creatively so I improved this for my final magazine where I used a model in full creative costume which reflected the indie genre of my music magazine. Furthermore, I used much more interesting and creative text and image choice on my final product, which made it more effective and overall a higher standard piece of work than my original advert and college magazine. My creativity has been influenced by other magazines such as NME, Q and Kerrang which inspired me to produce work at a higher standard than before, as well as using software such as Photoshop which allows you to perform more tasks such as blemish removal and interesting text which the software I used for my preliminary task, Publisher, doesn’t allow you to do to the same level.

Throughout the course of the year I improved the depth of my planning and research that allowed me to produce a higher standard of finished product compared to my original college magazine. At first, my research was fairly basic. I used mainly essay form and didn’t analyse to a proficient level however throughout the year I managed to improve the quality of my planning and research. I achieved this by using different software to present my research such as Prezi, an online presentation software, Slideshare, which allows you to upload presentations from your computer and Go Animate, which allows you to produce mini-movies to present your work. These are a much more creative, fun and lively way to present your work as opposed to a fairly uninspiring essay.  Furthermore, I analysed work in much more depth than at the start of the year, which allowed me to access higher grade boundaries as well as showing how my analytical skills have developed over the course of the year.

The postproduction of my final product was much more advanced, complicated and developed than my original college magazine. For my college magazine, the only postproduction I really engaged with was adding text and a barcode to my magazine, as I did not manipulate the image. This produced a fairly basic product that did not compare with my final product in terms of quality and creativity.
However, for my final product I completed the postproduction on Photoshop that instantly improves the quality of my magazine. The first stage of postproduction was actually retaking my images several times to get the prefect shot. This entailed new lighting techniques and reframing of the shots. After this was completed, I manipulated my image on Photoshop which included improving the skin tone and removing blemishes, reshaping hair, slimming the profile of my model as well as improving the brightness of eyes and small yet important features like that. The next stage was adding texts and backgrounds to my products. I used a background adapted from the Internet for my double page spread, which really tied in with the genre and made it look professional. I added text to my cover and contents pages from dafont.com that allows you to pick any type of font you desire and this increased the verisimilitude of my final product.

I followed media conventions strictly in my final product, which I didn’t do in my preliminary texts. In my college magazine, my image was poorly framed with little genre specific mise-en-scene and used a poor choice of text, which went against conventions thus producing a product that looked more like a poster than a real music magazine. Throughout the year I developed my skills and knowledge of media conventions that allowed me to create a much more realistic and professional music magazine. In my final product, I used a colour scheme, which reflected my genre of indie that is conventional. Furthermore I added a skyline, a footer, pull quotes, a barcode and a price which I either didn’t do or added unconventionally in my earlier attempts which adds to the verisimilitude of the magazine. The costume my model used was much more conventional than the costume used in my preliminary task. It was more conventional as she wore dark colours and make up and posed in a ‘rockstar’ fashion that is conventional of indie music magazines. In terms of my image, the shot was framed more conventionally in my final product so you could see her face and her pose much more clearly than in my first task. Overall, I feel my skills have developed rapidly and to a great extent over the course of the first year that allowed me to produce a proficient product.

Brief synopsis of my short film.

The genre of my short film is a crime film. The film begins in a kitchen when a teenage boy walks in to find his sister with his bag of drugs that he explains he has been delivering for a drug baron for money. Annoyed, the sister flushes the drugs down the sink however she has put him in grave danger, as he has to meet the man later on to hand over the money. The boy decides to meet him but first takes a secret package out from under the hedge. He meets the baron at a quarry who at first threatens and intimidates the boy as he says he can’t pay him back. The tables are turned when he pulls out the contents of the package- a gun- and says he will kill the man. The man says he will pay him off if the boy lets him live and he promises to leave him alone too, however when he gets the money out the car he charges it towards the boy and knocks him down before going into his boot to get a club he would use to finish him off however the boy has somehow reached for the gun and shoots the baron dead. Thinking he is safe, he rings his sister to come and rescue him however the camera pans from the ringing phone to his sisters’ dead body in the kitchen. The man sent someone round to kill his sister while he was away.

Transition task: Final Video

This is the transition task video we created in our group. I hope to improve upon this throughout my A2 year to create a better and more professional product, which I am thinking may be a short film as I would enjoy writing the script ect.

Poster for the album

This is our poster for the album cover.

Lyrics

The lyrics for this music video has been over played as she is not actually singing the lyrics as Amber did not have to lip-synch with the lyrics, however she says 'Yeah' twice at the timings of 0.43 and 0.53.
Below are the lyrics:

Don't you think that it's boring how people talk

Making smart with their words again, well I'm bored

Because I'm doing this for the thrill of it, killin' it

Never not chasing a million things I want

And I am only as young as the minute is full of it

Getting pumped up from the little bright things I bought

But I know they'll never own me(Yeah)

Baby be the class clown

I'll be the beauty queen in tears

It's a new art form showing people how little we care (yeah)

We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear

Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah)

Filming schedule

We filmed a practise of our music video on Friday 13th June, we will film our final version of the music video on Friday 20th June.

We needed to rerecord our music video because it it needs refining as the camera occasionally goes blurry and the lip-synching is slightly out of time.

Storyboard

In order to make the best remake we can possibly do, we had to make a storyboard to show step by step action of what we need to in each screen grab, for example if the lighting needs to be either lighter or darker. However with this specific video we chose there was no changes in the costume or make up so that stay the the same for each screenshot and the same with the cinematography as it stay a medium close up throughout the whole video.
